WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION TO ONLINE  HEALTH PROFESSIONALS COURSE IN PALLIATIVE CARE

Introduction and welcome

Welcome come to this short online course in palliative care which is specially designed for busy doctors, clinical officers, registered nurses/midwives, pharmacists and dispensers. The course aims to equip key health professionals with knowledge and skills of modern methods of palliative care including management of pain and other symptoms in patients with cancer and other life limiting illnesses and thereby facilitate the integration of palliative care into mainstream health care services in resource limited settings.

Palliative care education is one of the four components of the World Health Organization (WHO) public health strategy for palliative care and its provision is crucial for the effective integration or establishment of palliative care for the benefit of patients with palliative care needs and their families.

The course will introduce the learners to a range of palliative care topics and prepare them to undertake holistic assessment and management of needs of adults and children with life threatening illnesses and their families and make appropriate referrals.

The course consists of 20 course units which will be delivered online, an effective way of saving training costs such as travelling and accommodation and time spent away from families and work places. It is flexible and enables a trainee to learn at his/her own convenient time and place without incurring costs.

Each course unit will be assessed by different methods and there will be an examination at the end.
